Coffee Beans

about us.

Created as mae B in 2006 as an occasional market to upcycle furniture and homegoods.  Coffee and breakfast items were added the following year.  We are open Monday through Friday 6-11 am.  We love serving the community that is Hartley.   We were proud to be named O'Brien county's 2022 Travel Iowa Gem.

our business.

This adventure began in 2006.  Mae B started as an occasional market with upcycled, repurposed furniture and home goods.  The coffee shop was added the following year.  After a couple of moves the old Hartley (originally Ruby) Implement building was purchased in 2009.

An expansion into Spencer in 2011 was an epic fail.  In 2013, Dan Degnan, a favorite uncle died and left us a new adventure - an estate and acreage full of treasures and memories and much hard work. It prompted an encouragement to have Donald and Margaret Dau (the parents) consider a move to Hartley.

The name change happened in 2018, along with the beginning of renovations in the building.  With houses sold, we (the Welchs) and the Daus moved into the building just months before the pandemic.  Our directions changed after being closed for 3 months.  Taking care of the Daus became our priority. In 2022, we lost Donald.  He left us with many, many memories and much love.

We are incredibly blessed to be here, to be in this world, and to be surrounded by such a wonderful community of caring, supportive people.
